Hand Woven Pine Needle Baskets
from Nicaragua
| High upon a beautiful pine covered ridge live the women of the women's cooperative of El Cerro, Nicaragua. The cooperative was formed several years ago with the help of a Dutch organization and today continues to flourish. They make these beautiful pine needle baskets. They harvest the pine needles and then begin the long process of weaving them by hand. Thousands of pine needles can make up one basket. Although it can take a woman one full week to weave a single basket, all of the artisans are piad according to Fair Trade federation standards.
The clean scent of pine lingers for many months and fills the room where they are displayed with their fresh aroma. The purchase of these decorative pine needle baskets helps continue this art form and provides an excellent incentive to good forest management.
